Journey through the Alps

The Alps

This was a journey of 25 stages accomplished over 31 days between 16th Feb and 17th March 2016. David Hamilton and Steve Kentish did the entire trip. John Kentish joined them for the stages S01-S05. Harvey Lyons joined the team for stages S08-S25. Claire Marvin drove a support vehicle for the first two weeks of the trip between Chamonix and Simplon Pass.

Distances and heights were measured using a Garmin GPS Map62. Distance, ascent and descent were measured daily. The information recorded is: distance covered 518km, ascent 30,621m, descent 30,321m.

Of the 31 overnight stops 19 were in valley accommodation (hotels, B&B, YH), 9 nights were spent in 9 different unstaffed huts (winter rooms), 3 nights were spent in 3 different staffed huts. All the huts were owned by the SAC, CAI & UTOE. All of the winter rooms had unlocked doors.

The route taken is described in individual stages below. For each stage there is a map of the route and a link to download a GPS track in a .gpx format. This is a track of the route taken and is not necessarily the optimal route. This track data should be used along with the notes to identify the best line for travel.
