Journey through the Alps

The Alps

Eastern Switzerland and Western Austria

This was a journey of 35 stages accomplished over 49 days between 8th Feb and 28th March 2017. David Hamilton and Steve Kentish did the entire trip. Andy Helm joined them for the first 6 days. Alex Miller, in Innsbruck, gave valuable logistic help. Distances and heights were measured using a Garmin GPS Map62. Distance, ascent and descent were measured daily. The information recorded is: distance covered 745.8km, ascent 39,800m, descent 40,159m.

Of the 49 overnight stops 25 were in valley accommodation (hotels, B&B, YH), 22 nights were spent in 18 different unstaffed huts (winter rooms), 1 night was spent in a staffed hut, and 1 night was spent in a bivouac (ski lift station). 16 of the winter rooms had unlocked doors. The two requiring use of a DAV/ ÖAV key were the Geraer Hutte and the Ignaz Mattis Hutte.

The route taken is described in individual stages below. For each stage there is a map of the route and a link to download a GPS track in a .gpx format. This is a track of the route taken and is not necessarily the optimal route. This track data should be used along with the notes to identify the best line for travel.
