Journey through the Alps

The Alps

Eastern Austria

This was a journey of 16 stages accomplished over 17 days between 19th Feb and 7th March 2018 by David Hamilton and Steve Kentish. Claire Marvin provided vehicle support and organized the accommodation during the trip. Distances and heights were measured using a Garmin GPS Map62. Distance, ascent and descent were measured daily. The information recorded is: distance covered 363km, ascent 15,430m, descent 16,404m.

Of the 16 overnight stops 14 were in valley accommodation (hotels and guesthouses). 1 night was spent in the winter room of an unstaffed hut, and 1 night was spent in a bivouac in a shed next to a locked hut.

The route taken is described in individual stages below. For each stage there is a map of the route and a link to download a GPS track in a .gpx format. This is a track of the route taken and is not necessarily the optimal route. This track data should be used along with the notes to identify the best line for travel.
