Mountaineering :: Trekking :: Ski touring

In the 2006/2007 Antarctic season I spent 8 weeks in Antarctica working for Antarctic Logistics and Expeditions (ALE).

This involved operating and maintaining the camp facility at Vinson Base Camp and conducting environmental and safety 'ranger' patrols on the mountain.

Additionally I made 3 ascents of Mt Vinson 4897m during the season. I made an early season ascent with 2 ALE guide colleagues on 28th  Nov 2006. I took 2 Spanish climbers to the summit on 17th Dec 2006 and repeated the climb with 3 clients (from USA, China & Brazil) on 22nd Dec 2008.

These 3 climbs were the 3rd, 4th and 5th  times that I had climbed Vinson.

I was also involved in a significant 'rescue incident' that happened on Vinson between 3rd and 5th December. ALE staff worked together with more than 20 climbers from a variety of guided and independent groups to assist 4 climbers experiencing difficulties at the top of the 'headwall' close to Camp 2. Thanks to the excellent work of everyone who helped with the rescue the climbers involved were helped down the mountain with only minor injuries.

There are no pictures available to illustrate this trip on this site. My photographs were taken on slide film and I have not found the time to make scans. Pictures of my other Vinson ascents in 2003, 2005 and 2007 are available and give a good idea of what is involved.
