Mountaineering :: Trekking :: Ski touring

This was my 14th season working in Antarctica and my 12th working for ALE. I was ‘on contract’ for 80 days and spent 70 of these in Antarctica. During this time I did a wide variety of tasks at different locations, as can be seen from the pictures opposite.

In the early part of the season I took part in organizing the Antarctic Ice Marathon at Union Glacier. After this I led a number of climbing , hiking and ski programmes for clients based at the Union Glacier camp. In early December I climbed Mt Vinson with ALE clients reaching the summit on 15th Feb (this was my 23rd ascent of the peak). Following this I was again based at Union Glacier for a period before accompanying a group on a flight to the South Pole involving an overnight stay at the ALE camp. On returning to Union Glacier we had a successful meteorite search using metal detectors on areas of blue glacier ice. My final tasks of the season were at Vinson Base Camp. I was Camp Manager during V5 when the last climbing groups of the season were on the mountain. After this,  I was part of the team who closed down the facilities on the mountain and prepared camp for the winter.

The ALE operation continues to grow in size and complexity. The services and facilities provided to customers improve every season and it takes a larger number of staff to deliver these. There are many challenges involved in living and working in Antarctica, and it is good to face them as part of a talented and hard working team. I am looking forward to welcoming more visitors to Antarctica next season.
