This was my 17th season working in Antarctica and my 15th working for ALE. After spending most of the previous season working at the Gould Bay emperor penguin colony this was a return to a more regular mix of duties. I spent the first few weeks of the season based at Union Glacier working on a mix of local area guiding duties and customer service tasks. I then worked with a Norwegian guide to lead a group on a ‘last degree’ ski expedition from 89 degrees south to the Geographic South Pole. My next task was to be Camp Manager at Vinson Base Camp during the V3 rotation. This was at the end of December and a small group of staff and clients enjoyed Christmas dinner at VBC.
My final project of the season was working with two other guides to provide support to small film team from the UK. With 2 people in front of camera and 3 people behind the camera this was by far the smallest of the three film projects supported by ALE this season. The group spent three weeks in Antarctica and all the filming was done from a mobile camp supported by a large ALE vehicle. This enabled us to travel substantial distances from Union Glacier to experience a variety of Antarctic landscapes.
